@Bruce,
It all depends on where you are fishing! If you are fishing the ICW and using frozen shrimp there are going to be alot of catfish and rays. Try using live finger mullet and even live shrimp. Fish structure, not only the open water.

Hi, I am an embry riddle student I have been fishing the surrounding area for about 4 months. I just have not been very sucessful other than catching small catfish and stingrays. I was wondering if you could offer me some advice, or least point me in the right direction. I have been fishing saltwater in my home state for 10 years I’ve brought my techniques from my previous experience, fishing in Florida is identical to New Jersey pretty much. I envy your sucess on the river.

I’m hearing mixed things from all over the state, I’m hearing some people say their snook population is fine and then I’m hearing other say there’s hardly any snook in their area…

BTW way did you go to the snook foundations web site and vote on wether you think the season should be open or not? I think they are going to present the result to FWC . . .

I don’t like to eat fish but in the coldest months of winter here in Florida I go after the sheepshead. My secret? I use tiny hooks and small pieces of freshly dead bait.

An 18″ whiting is huge!

I also run into a lot of people who “dont want to spend the extra money on live shirmp” when they spend a fair amount on frozen every week and hardly catch anything worth talking about! Its worth the extra buck or two!

Excellent tips. It’s amazing the amount of people I see fishing with dead shrimp and then complaining that the only thing they ever catch is cat fish!
You try to tell them and then they say something like “I don’t want to go through all that trouble” . . .

The only smaller flounder I have ever caught were in a cast net while netting bait!
