Blue Crab – A Bakers Dozen on the ICW

After spending 3 weeks working on the Gulf Coast of Louisiana and seeing the love that area has for Blue Crab I decided to try my hand at catching a few. Carl and I went to a private dock on the Inter-Coastal Waterway to see what was biting and I brought along a 2-ring crab net.

Using chicken necks as bait and only checking the net periodically I was able to land 13 keeper Blue Crab. I landed far more than 13 but many were either small or pregnant females. I also threw back many non-pregnant females.

I was very easy to catch these crabs and was pretty much a passive effort. It is pretty clear that it is a good year for Blue Crab! They were everywhere!

I boiled them in Old Bay and onion seasoned water. They were delicious, but a lot of work. While working my way through the crab I learned a few tricks that helped speed up and ease the process that I will use on my next attempt at blue crab!
